Wow who woulda thought two premium paid subscription services of content that were previously free… and still are sorta... in one day... huh…
Well over the last several months rumors have been circulating around the interwebs, about Hulu possibly going to a paid subscription method, and potentially coming to consoles. Well the rumors are true, and Hulu Plus has come into the light. With Hulu plus you get to watch entire seasons of shows, instead of just the previous five episodes, and clips. For some shows like the awesome Arrested Development, the entire series will be there for you viewing pleasure. The most relevant feature by far however is the fact that you will be able to watch you Hulu plus subscription on a multitude of devices, like you PS3, Xbox 360, iPhone, iPad, and even several internet enabled televisions, all without the need for a satellite/ cable subscription.
I love the idea of not buying a cable box, and I was thinking about this earlier this week actually. Cable boxes are expensive and I can afford to live without one, I mostly just watch stuff on Hulu anyway. I like their service, but as of right now this isn’t really a buy for me. I always go out and think about buying box sets of DVDs of television shows and they almost always go dormant for ages at a time, but I guess Hulu makes things easier. I can see the practical application of this, but with free Hulu, that’s in the now, and rotating backlog seasons for some shows, I’m not sure if this justifies a purchase for me just yet, but when I get out of college and get my own place, $120 a year sounds a lot better than $120 a month for cable.
For all you that don’t know what Hulu is it is a free internet site, sponsored by several major television networks (like fox, nbc, abc, etc.) that has full television episodes to view on their site. It’s actually really cool, so you should check it out; it’s a lot easier than using TiVo.
