Much ado about Wonder Woman’s new costume in her 600th issue/ Costume Retrospective

Well Wonder Woman wears new wears, and people wonder were the wonder went…

So in the perennial 600th issue of Wonder Woman’s 600th issue she debut a new outfit, too much fan hate from all corners of the internet. The Super Heroin is not new to having new duds, but the fan backlash on this one so far has been harsh, so let’s take a quick look at some of her landmark outfits over the years.

The Original
Look there in the sky it's a woman deflecting bullets!!!

This outfit is the classic and the forerunner to the standard wonder woman outfit we see on a regular basis, however one thing about this design over the standard is actually the thing they removed, the skirt. If you know anything about Wonder Woman’s background, you know she is an Amazon warrior from the island of Themiscara, meaning she’s Greek, and if you know anything about Greek battle garb they featured pleated battle skirts. While the original skirt isn’t really designed for battle, it still makes sense that she would be wearing a skirt into battle. I don’t know but I love the classic uniform.

The Classic/ Common Garb
From a JLA movie

While mild details differentiate over 600 issues and who know how many crossover books, television shows, and television atrocities this is essentially what you will get out of most of the wonder woman outfits, no miniskirt, and the wristbands alternated between gold and silver. IT’s a good classic iconic design, and it has catapulted Wonder Woman to being arguably the most recognizable super heroin to be their own character, instead of a spin off like bat girl or super girl.  Now for some of you less familiar with Wonder Woman’s history, you remember how I said in the last blurb that she is a Greek Amazon, so you might be wondering why she sports American colors. Well theirs two reasons for that A. American centric Heroes sold better in the 40’s, and B. When she came/was banished/ whatever back-story she had at the time, to America to observe Mankind, she decided to come as an ambassador and wear the colors of the nation she came to.

Karate Wonder Woman
I don't care this never happened

Yea… during the seventies Wonder Woman gave up her powers and learnt karate, and fought people in a purple kill bill outfit… okay moving on

The New Look, let’s call it Wonder Woman 600
600.. that's like twice as cool as 300!!!

I like this new look it’s modern it’s frankly less misogynistic, although if you ask wonder woman it’s probably more misogynistic. The jacket seems useless, but I like the look for it. The fact that she wears pants is a nice touch, and there black implying a darker character, same with the muted colors of the rest of her outfit. The new gauntlets look odd, kind of punkish. Over all I like the new look for wonder woman, but It doesn’t feel like her exactly, it feels more like it belongs to Donna Troy (if you want to know who Donna Troy is, look it up, and prepare to lose the next three hours to Wikipedia). IF they made a movie I wouldn’t be surprised if they went with a design more like this, just to lure in a more wide scale actress. I have read the first 10 pages of wonder woman 600 (you can to in a free preview you can access on your PSP, and maybe online too), and I like where the new storyline is coming from, it makes the outfit make sense when taken in context.

All in all with the cyclical nature of comic books Wonder Woman will be back to her normal garb in a short amount of time, especially considering all the fan backlash against the new outfit. Don’t fear poor comic nerds you will be able to see her old outfit again, even if it’s only in your dreams.

Notes
Some of you may notice I didn't mention the live action outfit, or the classic outfit that does have the pleats that shows up from time to time, and thats because they don't matter so much,  I love the idea of pleats and wonder woman looks badass with them but since their rarely around they don't matter so much, and tv series is the same as common garb except she sometimes wears a cape in a few photos. SO before you call me out on it, I did mention them.
